Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a maroon Greek cross bearing at its center a white pelican's head with a yellow beak, between a blue scroll with three folds surmounting the upper arms of the cross and terminating at the sides of the foot, inscribed "HEALTH CARE FIRST" in silver letters.

Symbolism
Maroon and white are the colors used for Medical organizations.  The cross, a traditional symbol for aid and assistance symbolizes the basic mission of the Hospital.  The pelican, emblem of Louisiana, alludes to the present home area of the Hospital.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 23 March 1976.
